Founder profile

Steve Whitehead founded 5th Hammer Innovation after more than twenty years working inside higher education. He has been faculty, held academic leadership roles, led institutional innovation work, and advised senior academic leaders on strategic planning, accreditation, organizational change and workforce initiatives. He writes about one problem: why good ideas get stuck in higher education, and what leaders can do about it.

His argument is that higher education rarely has a shortage of ideas. What institutions struggle with is movement — getting an idea from discussion to an owned next move. That gap is where momentum is won or lost, and it is the subject of everything 5th Hammer publishes.

Steve has held faculty and academic leadership roles, led institutional innovation and change work, and consulted with leadership teams across higher education and other complex organizations. He is also a military veteran. He is the creator of the 5th Hammer Framework, which balances exploration and execution using design thinking principles, and the 5th Hammer named concepts — Approval Tax, Decision Debt, Polite Stall, Innovation Theater, Quiet Failure, Intake Black Hole and Momentum Leaks. He was a featured guest on the EdUp Provost podcast, discussing how higher education can turn ideas into action.

He works with leadership teams, provosts, deans and department chairs through workshops, diagnostics and short focused engagements.
